URBANIA

When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.
— Samuel Johnson

Every weekend James hops on a train from a quiet small town in Cambridgeshire all the way to the heart of London. There, in his beloved Soho, he hunts for vibrant characters of all possible colour and social background. Looking with nothing but curiosity and openness at the city people, he is fascinated by their unique identities. He watches them share and navigate the vast communal space in an attempt to make it their own. Free from stereotyping or preconceived ideas, he is simply wondering what their life story might be and what brought them here, ultimately touching on their humanity and the qualities they all share.

“James D Fell’s photography captures urban people and scenes without ever succumbing to sentimentality or snarkiness. His subjects do what city people do: they phone, window shop, meditate, push prams, carry dogs, sell produce—and are almost always on the move. Using bright dashes of colour, Fell plucks them out of their quotidian surroundings and makes them into distinct individuals rather than types.” - Prof. Raoul Eshelmen
